This post is a little different from me, but it’s one that I thought might be useful. There are so many incredible creatives and entrepreneurs in this community, and for many of us being featured in or writing for mainstream media is a vital way to build our businesses or simply make money in its own right. But many people find it a completely impenetrable world.
I used to think I’d never be able to break into that world, either. Yet I now write semi-regular opinion pieces for i News, and I’ve written for The Independent, Newsweek, Bylines Network, and many more. I’ve also had either myself or my business featured in Grazia, Stylist, HuffPost, Mashable, BBC Radio 4, More radio, and so many more (I’m Googling my own name right now to try to remember them all!).
I wanted to share what I’ve learned so far because we need a greater variety of people getting their voices out there. The media is a bit of an old boys network, and you often hear the same types of people being interviewed and read opinions that are rooted in one type of experience. We need a greater variety of stories, we need to hear about different lives, different perspectives, different people. We need to hear about you.
Here’s everything I know (so far) about getting your words into the media. I’ve split it into two sections: getting featured (so being quoted or mentioned in a piece written by a journalist) or getting published (having a piece you have written or created yourself published by a media outlet, credited under your name). I’m starting with getting featured this week, and I’ll add getting published next week.
